Acer laptop Adaptor Problem?
Hi, i have a laptop, Acer Aspire 5315. Recently the Power Adaptor broke, and a new one costs about £70, I have a spare toshiba power adaptor, everything is the same apart from the output. The acer one says 19v (3.45v), and the toshiba one says 19v (3.95v)
If i switched tops being the adaptor part that plugs into the machine, would this blow the laptop up?
The light on the acer power adaptor does not light up..
Well, first there is some more information we need here.
A 19v 3.95a adapter will work on a computer that takes a 19v 3.45a adapter because the computer will only draw as many Amps as is needed, and the toshiba adapter provides at least 3.45a.
But, there is a question of the polarity. The inside and the outside of the plug are the positive and negative terminals, if the Acer was positive in the middle and negative on the outside, and the toshiba is the opposite, it could damage the computer.
But, before we get to that... We need to determine if the power adapter is the actual part that is broken.
AC adapters do not often fail. What is MUCH MUCH more likely is that the jack that the adapter plugs into on the laptop is damaged.
Try plugging the old adapter in and wiggle the plug around inside the jack. It should fit snugly if it is not broken, if it is the jack will be loose and you will notice that wiggling it certain ways will make the computer recognize the adapter.
If the jack is snug, then you can switch the tips of the adapters so long as the polarity is correct and you properly insulate the two splices from each other using solder and electrical tape or heatshrink tubing.
